Review: The King

The King
The King by J.R. Ward

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The King was a tome packed full of the Black Dagger Brotherhood and their world. Specifically the focus was on Beth and Wrath, but JRW has never written a BDB book that didn't involve other storylines or POVs.

Beth wants a baby, and Wrath isn't too keen on the idea. Due to the high mortality rate in vampire females who carry children, he can't imagine a world where Beth isn't in it. Conversely, we get a glimpse of Wrath's parents, their mating and marriage, and how he ruled. The parallels and differences between the Wraths and their challenges as husbands and rulers were fascinating to me, and the strong love they had for their mates was beautiful.

Twelve books in, returning to the BDB is like hanging out with an old friend once a year. Sometimes it's silly, sometimes it's raunchy, sometimes it's heart-stopping action, sometimes it's jaw-dropping surprising, and sometimes it's heartbreaking. What it never is, is boring. JRW knows how to keep her readers on the edge of their seats, and lure them into these juicy plots that twist and turn and never end.

This book was a transition to a new phase in the BDB world. She has said that as long as we read them, she will write them. If she was so inclined, this could have been the book to wind things up. However, she has plenty more stories to tell, and we have lots more questions that need to be answered. As always, I can't wait until next spring!
